Brand New

For this brief we were asked if there was such thing as a new idea, and the second element was to brand ourselves.

I started off with a simple collage/brainstorm of me, likes dislikes, history etc.

When researching whether or not it's possible to come up with an entirely new idea I came across this quote by Mark Twain:

When thinking about my USP, I came to the same conclusion again and again, my drawings are what's special about me. It's what makes me different to anyone else. I could have chosen my physical attributes to define myself, but that's not who I am, and it's not how I define people.

Recently I have been experimenting with printing techniques, in particular photocopy transfer. My drawing was scanned and printed b/w using a laserjet printer. After soaking the image with water, an oil based ink is sponged on and wiped away again using more water. Laying the image on clean paper, it is then put through the printing press. The image will now have transferred from the photocopy onto the paper. The photocopy can be re-used at least 10 times.

I made an edition of 10 prints.

My problem:

When I am printing, my hands get covered in ink. It takes too much time washing my hands in between prints, especially if I am printing editions. The ink from my hands transfers onto the clean paper, so I get unwanted fingerprints and smudges. I need something easy to slip on and off while I’m printing, so there is no chance of ink transfer from my hands to the clean print.

The culprit:

From this, I decided to research gloves as this could be a possible solution to my problem.

Types of gloves:

I came across an interesting article discussing whether white gloves aid in protecting historical artifacts, or if they do the complete opposite.

To solve my problem I looked at dish washing (rubber) gloves. The solution was there, just not in the full form of the glove. So I cut the glove to the bare minimum of what was of use to me. Less is more.
