For this project we were given a quote and asked to make a purely typographical A1 poster, a T-shirt and a billboard to represent this quote.

Research and font choice:

Lawrence Peter Berra otherwise known as” Yogi” Berra, was an American baseball catcher, manager and coach, with most of his career playing for the New York Yankees. He worked in the navy until 1946 when he then exchanged his uniform for baseball pinstripes. His great bat control meant he had a knack for swinging and hitting pitches near his eyes or burrowing around his ankles “if I can hit it, it’s a good pitch”. The ‘yogi’ nickname comes from how he resembled a yogi anytime he was upset or lost a game. He was also known for his witty often paradoxical quotes: “half the game is 90% mental” “it ain’t over ‘till it’s over” “when you come to a fork in a road, take it”.

The font I have chosen to use is Rockwell Std-Extrabold. It’s a new font, and I chose it because it seemed representative of the baseball and New York elements.

Play Bill NEW YORK YANKEES

But the Rockwell extra bold seemed the most legible and baseball like.

I bought a baseball bat and ball from JD Sports. It's not the full size bat because 1) It was more expensive and 2) the larger bat was as big as me.

To further understand the game of baseball I decided to make my own ball to the dimensions of a real baseball.

Here is the First t-shirt I made with the quote on the front and 'Berra' on the back using transfer paper. The Berra on the back is more successful than the front quote.

 

T-shirt Ideas:

Instead of asking a fashion student to help me with the embroidery, I decided to teach myself how to machine applique to use for my final t-shirt design. These are the practice letters.

This is the final T-shirt design. I ran out of thread twice, each time I replaced the thread with a lighter shade of grey, so the ombre effect was accidental. The t-shirt being of a soft material meant I had to use paper underneath the section to be embroidered, so the sewing machine could run smoothly.

When I was thinking about the A1 poster, this idea came to mind, an origami baseball - purely typographic.

A1 Poster: Scrunched up tracing paper in the shape of a ball, with the quote and quoter's name written on, so when it's opened up the writing is dispersed and distorted. I did this because after playing baseball in the classroom where the ball was going to be hit was unpredictable.

For the first billboard design I used the scrunched tracing paper ball as the background
